Moose Hunting...

Lewis Hills | Twin Lake | Mitchell's Pond
LEWIS HILLS PROVINCIAL PRESERVE

It has taken 10 years to get the outfitting permit for the Lewis Hills Provincial Reserve in Moose Management Area 6. This lodge just opened in 1998 with 100% success As a result permits have sold very well and you may have to wait till 2006 or 2007 to book this hunt. Call for E-mail for openings or to book this hunt in advance.

Located on the north shore of Serpentine Lake in the heart of the beautiful Serpentine Valley and Lewis Hills Reserve, this new Lodge is accessible only by four wheel drive and then a three mile boat trip down the lake. Remote as it may seem, this lodge still boasts hot and cold running water, shower, electricity etc. The hunter to guide ratio is 2 x 1 (add $250 for 1 x 1). The camp cook will be serving homemade meals that are simply second to none!

Trophy moose can be taken right in the vicinity of the lodge but a special fly-out hunt is offered for those wanting to expend the extra time and effort to take the 'bull of their dreams'. This hunt will focus on mature bulls with spreads of 48"-60" and 20-30 points. Every effort will be made to put this kind of trophy in front of you in the most remote parts of the region. Extra guides and a helicopter (the reason for the added cost) will be used for access and to retrieve your trophy. You can add a baited bear hunt.

SOUTH TWIN LAKE AREA

A moose hunter's dream......
This Lodge is remotely located on the northwest shore of South Twin Lake and outfits in the vast area known as Moose Management Area 15. The area is true wilderness and inaccessible to residents or other outfitters! This area currently has the highest moose density of anywhere on the island. Only about 20% of the allocated zone has been hunted so far, and new locations will be penetrated again this season. Extending the area hunted each season has allowed us to maintain the potential for trophy quality moose. Since opening in 1993, several bulls of 20-24 points with spreads of 50+ inches have been taken. Certainly every moose is not this large but the chances of seeing a real trophy are probably better here than many areas of Newfoundland. Each year the guides become more familiar with archery and blackpowder hunters. Taking a bull moose (a cow for that matter) with archery gear is quite a thrill. The special archery season is the two week period prior to the regular season opening in mid-September. Only a few 'serious' bowhunters are taken each year. Our photos are often used by the Dept. of Tourism and for promotional purposes.

There is now access to some of the best Trophy Woodland Caribou on the island in adjoining Caribou Management Area 67. Woodland Caribou are not nearly as wary as moose and are therefore well suited to both blackpowder and bowhunting. Newfoundland is the only place in the world that has a huntable population of this species. If you want a place in the Boone & Crockett, SCI, Leatherstocking or Pope & Young books, this Is THE place to go!

A combination hunt for moose and caribou can also be arranged. Areas with the best moose hunting pportunities do not usually have a large concentration of woodland caribou and the top caribou spots have fewer moose. We hunt these two species in two distinct and different locations for this reason. This requires extra transportation, time and effort. If you are serious about a chance at taking both species without making two separate trips, this may be the hunt for you - an extended stay or two week package and pricing can be arranged.

Your host has an impressive 37 years of experience in guiding and outfitting. The Lodge is outstanding and comfortable and boasts a staff of competent guides and a great cook. Accommodations include: semi-private bedrooms for two, shower, electricity, TV/VCR etc. The equipment used during the hunt is also top-notch: Separate guide quarters, walk-in screened meat house, 4X4 ATV's, and sturdy 18' boats equipped with 55hp motors for travel on South Twin Lake. You can drive to Newfoundland and meet us in Grand Falls, or be picked up at Gander Airport.

Complete package includes: licenses, meals, lodging, 1x1 guiding and all taxes. Non-hunting guests are always welcome.
